Loch Sport - Victoria - Australia - Living Between the Pacific Ocean and Lake Victoria

Meeting My First Kangaroos

Never had I been so close to a wild animal before, but as I stood and stared into the beautiful brown eyes of my very first real life kangaroo, I felt full of a mix of elation but also a sense of privilege. Like I had been given an opportunity to meet a unique animal and I was so thrilled.

I stood at my front door and watched both Mama Kangaroo and her young joey crop at the grass, and basically just admired them. Their huge back legs and feet were a new novelty to me, and I excitedly waited for them to jump away. They quietly ate their fill, and then after looking at me, hopped away on strong, powerful feet.

After that day they regularly visited our front yard over the next few weeks, which gave me more of an excuse to watch and observe them - taking in their small front legs with claws attached, their long floppy ears, and the light grey of their fur. I too eventually gave them names which some of us humans  seem compelled to do - Mum Kangaroo was named Elsie and the young joey was named Edith.

So this daily ritual went on for quite sometime, until one day they did not return. I have to admit that I was a little sad. But luckily somewhere along the way, I did do a video of them, and I also took a few photos. So thankfully I have some nice reminders to look back on.

But not only that, I feel really honoured to have met both Elsie and Edith, and to have gotten to know them in a quiet human/animal sort of way. I just hope too that they are both still hopping around, have had more joeys, and are leading full and happy lives somewhere deep in our local national park.

My Slice of Paradise: Diving into the Ninety Mile Beach Marine National Park!

There's something truly magical about the Australian coastline, isn't there? The endless blue, the salty air... and for me, a recent discovery has really captivated my heart: the Ninety Mile Beach Marine National Park. I recently had the chance to delve into a truly special corner of Victoria, and I can't wait to tell you all about it.

Nestled off the stunning Gippsland coast in eastern Victoria, this marine park is an absolute gem. I remember looking at the map, seeing it situated about 30 kilometres south of Sale, and realizing just how perfectly placed it is, right beside the already beautiful Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park. It’s like a double dose of natural wonderland!

What really struck me, and what I find so important, is that this isn't just any stretch of ocean; it's a protected marine national park. It was officially gazetted on November 16, 2002, which means for over two decades now, its incredible ecosystems have been carefully looked after. Covering a generous 2,750-hectare area, this park is a vital sanctuary dedicated to preserving the underwater world.

When I think about 2,750 hectares of protected marine environment, my imagination just takes off! While I didn't get to scuba dive inside the park itself on this particular trip (it's primarily boat-accessible, offshore), just knowing it's there, doing its quiet work of conservation, fills me with a sense of wonder. I picture vibrant temperate reefs, abundant fish species, and perhaps even larger marine creatures navigating its waters, all thriving away from human impact. It's a crucial habitat, silently teeming with life, a true testament to Victoria's rich biodiversity.

And let's not forget the iconic name – Ninety Mile Beach! While the marine park itself is offshore, the adjacent Ninety Mile Beach is famous for its endless sands, perfect for long, contemplative walks, fantastic fishing spots, or just gazing out at the vast horizon. I have walked along that expansive coastline, feeling the sand between my toes, and knowing that just beyond the waves, this vital underwater world is robustly thriving. Its proximity to the Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park also means there's a whole world of diverse landscapes to explore – from tranquil lake systems to rugged coastal dunes. It truly makes for a fantastic destination if you're looking for a multifaceted nature escape.

So, if you're like me and have a deep appreciation for nature, especially our precious marine environments, I highly recommend learning more about or even planning a trip to the region around the Ninety Mile Beach Marine National Park. It's a beautiful example of how we can protect and cherish our natural heritage, and a constant reminder that some of the greatest wonders lie just beneath the surface.

Have you ever visited the Gippsland coast or explored any marine parks? I'd love to hear your experiences in the comments below! Happy exploring!

Lakes National Park Is Just Up The Road

There's something magical about stumbling upon a place that feels like your own secret discovery. That's exactly how I felt when I first visited at Lakes National Park, a peaceful bushland retreat nestled in the heart of Central Gippsland. Far from the crowds and noise of city life, this stunning slice of Victoria offers a quintessential Australian nature experience that stays with you long after you've returned home.

A Paradise Defined by Water and Wilderness

Lakes National Park occupies a truly special position along the Gippsland coastline, encompassing the scenic peninsula of Sperm Whale Head along with the pristine islands of Rotamah and Little Rotamah. What makes this park so captivating is how it blends dense bushland with tranquil water vistas at every turn. The park is framed by two magnificent lakes—Lake Victoria and Lake Reeve—whose calm waters reflect the shifting colors of sunrise and sunset in ways that seem almost painterly.

When I first visited the park, I was struck by the sense of remoteness that wash over me despite knowing civilization wasn't far away. The roads wind through majestic gums and native shrubs, with occasional glimpses of silver water through the trees. It's the kind of place where you automatically slow down, where the rush of daily life fades into the background, replaced by the gentle symphony of birdsong and whispering leaves.

Adventures for Every Nature Lover

Whether you're an avid explorer or simply seeking a peaceful escape, Lakes National Park delivers in spades. The swimming opportunities here are exceptional. The waters of Lake Victoria and Lake Reeve are refreshingly clean and inviting, perfect for a morning dip or an afternoon cool-down. There's something utterly relaxing about floating in these calm lakes, surrounded by nothing but bushland and sky.

The bushwalking trails throughout the park offer another wonderful way to experience this natural wonderland. I spent several hours wandering the remote trails, each turn revealing new vegetation communities and wildlife encounters. The paths range from gentle strolls suitable for families to more challenging routes for those seeking longer adventures. Whichever trail you choose, you'll find yourself immersed in typical Gippsland bushland, with abundant birdlife and the possibility of spotting some of the park's famous residents.

Camping at Emu Bight: Where Wildlife Becomes Your Neighbour

If you truly want to experience the magic of Lakes National Park, I highly recommend setting up camp at the Emu Bight Campground. This secluded camping area has earned a devoted following among families and nature enthusiasts, and it's not hard to understand why. The campground sits in a peaceful pocket of the park, surrounded by pristine bushland and just a short walk from the lake's edge.

"What I love most about Emu Bight is how the wildlife just becomes part of your camping experience," - a friend told me who had recently camped in the park. "The kangaroos graze right near your campsite at dusk, and during the early morning, you might find wombats wandering through or hear koalas calling from the trees above."

I can personally confirm this enchanted atmosphere. Each morning, I walk along the edges of the park, and the creaking of the trees, and the soft sounds of wildlife beginning their day, are just so calming.  There is nothing so wonderful. Kangaroos hop quickly  in front of me straight into the park as I near them, and crimson rosellas fly overhead gliding gracefully.

The campground is thoughtfully designed to be family-friendly while maintaining its secluded feel. Facilities are well-maintained, and the spacing between campsites ensures privacy and peace. Children have room to explore and connect with nature, while parents can relax knowing their little ones are in a safe, natural environment.

Plan Your Escape

Lakes National Park offers something genuinely rare in today's world: a chance to disconnect, breathe deeply, and reimagine what it means to spend time in nature. Whether you're swimming in crystal-clear lakes, wandering through scented bushland trails, or sharing your campsite with curious kangaroos and koalas, every moment here feels like a gift.

For anyone living in Victoria—or visiting from further afield—this park deserves a prominent spot on your travel list. Pack your tent, bring your sense of wonder, and prepare to fall in love with one of Gippsland's best-kept secrets. Trust me, your future self will thank you for making the trip.

Finding My Sanctuary: Why Moving to Loch Sport Was the Best Decision of 2024

There is a specific kind of magic that happens when you stop searching for a place to live and finally find a place to belong.

At the start of 2024, I packed up my life and made the move to a small, beautiful seaside community called Loch Sport, in Victoria, Australia. I’ll be honest—I expected an adjustment period. I expected the usual new town awkwardness where you spend weeks feeling like a tourist in your own neighbourhood. Instead, something unexpected happened: I felt part of the rhythm of life here from day one.

A World Away from the Noise

Loch Sport is the kind of peaceful sanctuary that restores the soul. It’s quiet, it’s unassuming, and it’s teeming with life. Every morning, I am greeted by a variety of flora and fauna that I’d previously only seen in nature documentaries. Being able to witness this wildlife up close—the vibrant native birds, the unique coastal plants, and the gentle bustle of nature—has been a complete revelation.

As I often say to my partner - the beauty of the surrounding national park and lakes to me is beyond compare

There is something grounding about living nestled between the park and the water. It’s a constant reminder to slow down, breathe, and appreciate the scenery that stretches out in every direction. Whether we are taking the dog for a walk or taking a quiet stroll near the national park, I find myself constantly pausing just to take it all in.

Why This Is Home

I’ve realized that it’s not just the views that make this place special, but the way the environment invites you to be present. In a world that is always demanding our attention, Loch Sport demands only that I observe and appreciate.

Every single day, I find more and more reasons to love my life here. It’s in the way the light hits the lake in the late afternoon, the kindness of the locals I’ve met, and the profound silence that settles over the town at night.

Moving here wasn’t just a change of address; it was a shift in perspective. If I’ve learned anything in my first year, it’s that when you surround yourself with natural beauty and a welcoming community, you don’t just settle into a home—you settle into a better version of yourself.

If you’re ever looking for a sign to slow down and embrace a life a little closer to nature, consider this your nudge. For me, Loch Sport has been the perfect place to start that chapter.

Have you ever moved to a place that felt like home the moment you arrived? I’d love to hear about your experiences in the comments below!
